We’ll cover whether to use an alias/pseudonym, separate social media identities, or a PO box, other safety and security issues, and the tricky prospect of blogging on someone else’s behalf (e.g., mommy blogging).

This hands-on workshop focuses on getting over writer’s block, and transforming your thoughts into written words. Using food as our focus, we’ll perform writing exercises to compose fully realized pieces. To attend this workshop, you’ll have to be open to sharing what you write out loud, discussing the rest of the group’s written pieces, and listening to feedback about your own. There’s only one person alive who can tell your story. We each have unique gifts and talents, and by sharing our creative passions we put a more rounded face on veganism. By highlighting your other creative interests, you can create a voice that is distinctly yours.

A discussion of the diversity of the vegan movement and message around the world. Blogging allows us to share ideas, create community, and advocate for the animals, but it can also result in hurt feelings, tension, and anxiety for both reader and writer. In this candid and constructive panel, we discuss topics ranging from disordered eating to body issues, race, politics, religion, and personal ethics. How do we remain mindful of language and others’ perspectives? When does sensitivity in our audience start to impose on personal expression, and where do we draw the line between being respectful and being unnecessarily censored? How can we foster open and productive conversations in our comments sections and on our blogs? Please come with questions, comments, and ideas!

    I dearly wish that someone would organize a discussion that focuses on the painful reality that not every product or recipe or restaurant, vegan or vegan-friendly, is good, that many are indeed mediocre, and how to be real and honest and discriminating with your palate and your (virtual) pen. We are in the very early stages of a vegan food evolution and there is so much that needs to be done better than it’s currently being done, in my opinion. Is it even possible to be brutally honest without hurting other people’s feelings, esp. when those people have presumably invested a great deal of their time and energy and yet come up short, in the opinion of the reviewer? For me this subject is the elephant in the room and I dare say no one will address it. Or maybe I’m just too damn picky.

      That’s a really great, eye-opening discussion. One of the big themes of Vida Vegan Con II is just that – having more thoughtful, and even controversial, discussions about the topics that affect vegans. Please feel free to ask away during class topics that touch on this (definitely worth-mentioning in a Q&A if the Product Reviews & Ethics class doesn’t bring it up) and submit a class topic when our online form comes post-con!

    Just wanted to ask what’s up with Friday in terms of meals as there are none listed and it’s a full day. Saturday and Sunday have breakfast and lunch. I just want to know what other meals to accommodate for and I am assuming for now that if they are not listed, we are on our own? Thanks!

      Janessa here.

      On Friday, we recommend checking in early and having enough time to check out a local food cart for lunch. Our exhibitors are also debuting their new products at the New Product Spotlight Friday early afternoon–there will be plenty of snacks there if you’re feeling munchy! And after the official conference start, Veggie Grill is hosting the reception with small snacks and bites.

      For Friday dinner, we recommend heading out to the Pop Up shop or making reservations at a restaurant you’ve been meaning to try. We tried to balance official conference meals with enough outside time to try some of the amazing spots in Portland.
